2)  Current activities in Europe:  Sweden - Elements and their speciation (Barbro Kollander, Division of Science, National Food Agency, Sweden)

  • Ongoing activities in Europe
    • News regarding the European Reference Laboratory on Heavy Metals:
      • New name  The EURL for Metals and Nitrogenous Compounds in Feed and Food (EURL-MN)
      • Now in Copenhagen, Denmark
      • Hosted by Jens Sloth, Food Institute DTU
      • First workshop 13-15 November
      • http://www.eurl-mn.eu/
    • Activities in The EURL for Metals and Nitrogenous Compounds in Feed and Food (EURL-MN)
      • Implement efficient methods for determination of metals and nitrogenous compounds in feed and food.
      • Boost the communication in the EURL/National Reference Laboratories (NRL)/ Official Laboratory network.
      •      (Each of EUs 28 countries have NRLs)
    • Activities in The EURL for Metals and Nitrogenous Compounds in Feed and Food (EURL-MN) Cont.
      • Strengthen education and training
      • Address knowledge gaps
      • Ensure harmonization in analysis
      • Arrange Proficiency tests (PT)
      • EURL-MN PT-2018-01:
      •      Ni, Cd, Pb, Hg, As, iAs in mixed corn poultry feed
      • EURL-MN PT-2018-02:
      •      Ni, Cd, Pb, Hg, As, iAs in chili powder
    • NMKL. New method published: Methylmercury, determination by isotope dilution  GC‐ICPMS in foodstuffs, NMKL method No. 202, 2018
    • CEN. New method published: Determination of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulfur and zinc by ICP-OES, EN 16943:2017

The second half of the meeting discussed the future work of the group moving forward.
Next we had Susan Audino from the Cannabis working group talk with the community about the need for a Cannabis ICPMS metals method. We need to ask the main working group to add for a call for methods for Cannabis.  Laura Wood from NIST asked if Hemp could be a possible SRM for Cannabis. Susan agreed it would work for a metals method.
Next we discussed the results of the ERP that happened on Sunday with data from the multi-laboratory testing (MLT) of AOAC Official Method 2015.01 (Heavy metals in foods).  The director of the study, Rick Reba (Nestle) asked for members to let us know if anyone uses the method.
